Male Condoms
Condoms
Condoms are one of the few methods of birth control that are effective at stopping the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Condoms are one of the most widely used contraceptives and are available at most pharmacies, grocery stores, and convenience stores.
Condoms are also one of the oldest methods of contraception. Condoms were first discussed by medical professionals in the seventeenth century as an effective tools to fight syphillis outbreaks. Shortly thereafter condoms were a subject of concern to Catholic theologians who believed condoms were also being used to prevent pregnancy and an effort was made to outlaw the sale and production of condoms.
In spite of controversy within the Catholic Church, condom use spread throughout Europe during the Renaissance and by the middle of the twentieth century condoms were the most popular form of contraception in the world.
Most condoms produced today are made from latex or synthetic polyurethane. Some condoms are packaged with lubricant and/or spermacide.
The effectiveness of condoms are entirely dependent on how they are used. While it is estimated that 'perfect use' failure rates for condoms are close to 2%, real-world statistical failure is probably much higher. Knowing how to use a condom is just as important as knowing why to use a condom.
