Birth Control and World Religions

Buddhism

Although Buddhism generally teaches fertility, teachings also support family planning. Especially where potential children could be a burden to the parents.

Hinduism

Hindu teachings are sometimes ambivalent about birth control. Like Buddhism, Hindu views of birth control can go both ways - encouraging fertility and large families, but also supporting family planning when additional children would be a burden or suffer for lack of care.

Islam

There is no specific condemnation of birth of birth control in Islamic texts. Historians suspect that Muslims may have even brought the first forms of birth control.

Judaism

Judaism attitudes toward birth control are similar to the theologies previously discussed. While promoting fertility, Judaism allows birth control as justified for the welfare of the mother.

Protestant

The majority of Protestants permit contraception of some form. However, negative attitudes towards family planning and birth control have increased recently.

Roman Catholic

Roman Catholicism has the most stringent attitudes towards contraceptives and birth control. Because the church teaches that the only purpose for sex is reproduction, there is no room for contraceptives. Many people forget however, that this is a relatively new occurrence in the Catholic church. Attitudes were much different 100 years ago.
